Services and supports revolve around the assumption that each person is a member of the community. Individuals living in an ICF often have a severe secondary medical component related to their developmental disability, and therefore each ICF has a NYS licensed Physician, RN/LPN, Physical and Occupational therapy, speech therapy, social work, and nutrition. Each resident's distinctive therapeutic needs are met with a homelike setting. SENIOR DAY HABILITATION PROGRAMProvides meaningful and functional activities for older individuals who need a change of pace. In an atmosphere that encourages older individuals to maintain and even enhance their quality of life, Senior Day Hab offers a unique experience where content is directed by the participants. Individuals choose activities which include arts and crafts, bingo, golf and a variety of community integration experiences. Most participants in the program have retired from other types of programs. The services provided help maintain their independence, productivity and sense of responsibility. SPECIAL NEEDS/SILVER ALERT PROGRAMOffers a program that allows family members of people with cognitive disabilities to register their loved one with the police department and provide a detailed physical description and some medical history . Participants receive a free bracelet with a police phone number and their registration number. Once alerted that a person is missing, police can access a database and transmit detailed information to patrol cars, precincts, highway information signs, and other agencies. VOCATIONAL INDEPENDENCE PROGRAMOffers a residential, college-based postsecondary transition program located in Old Westbury N.Y. for young adults with learning differences and Autism spectrum diagnoses. Since 1987, VIP has been helping students develop skills and accumulate experiences that help them reach their executive functioning, social, independent living, and work/college readiness goals. The programs include: Transition to Independence: this program is a VIP’s three-year curriculum program which emphasizes social, executive functioning, and independent living skills young adults need for independence and success. Employment Training: Students are placed in community-based internships with job coach support and participate in employment classes within the VIP curriculum. Pre-Degree Option: Students choose to take one to three credit-bearing courses per semester at NYIT, offered in conjunction with the VIP curriculum with individualized academic and counseling support. The Associate Degree Support Program is for qualified students who can earn an Associate’s Degree in three years in Communication Arts or Business Administration while receiving specialized support in academics and the traditional social and independent living support offered by VIP. The Introduction To Independence program is a I-to-I five-week summer experience that includes all the skill-building and experiential learning associated with VIP. I-to-I is open to high school students 17 and older who are either interested in VIP academic year programming or are in-between years at VIP. The Vocational Independence Program is a U.S. Department of Education-approved Comprehensive Transition and Postsecondary (CTP) program.
